I was born in Northamptonshire and a regular outing when I was a child was a bus ride to Northampton with Mum. Mum and Dad never learned to drive so it was buses everywhere. I was always terrified because as soon as Mum sat in a bus she fell asleep, and I was always thinking we would miss our stop, but we never did. It scarred me for life, as I hate bus travel now! I would love to include a picture of a bus but they just don’t make them like that anymore.
Mum worked in a shoe factory which made Doc Martens shoes and boots. I always wanted a pair of Doc Martens with daisies painted on them, and I still haven’t fulfilled that dream. I might go shopping in a minute. Not sure how a Bowen Therapist in Doc Martens would look – pretty good I should think?
So when you think of Northampton the thing you might think about is shoes and boots, (wasn’t the film Kinky Boots based in Northampton?), and Northampton Saints, and the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival to name but a few. Also my son has just moved into a flat in Northampton, and I have just started at Therapies At Wootton Fields, my new clinic. So much going on in Northampton! Well in my life anyway.
So, high heels, very lovely to look at, not always so easy to walk in, especially when you are already 5’9” like me, so I am probably safer in a pair of Doc Martens to be perfectly honest. Did you know that 1 in 10 women wear high heels at least 3 days a week? However, a third have fallen while wearing them. Many women suffer permanent problems due to wearing heels for a prolonged period of time. It doesn’t just hurt your feet, it damages your back.
So here’s a few of the issues which your heels might be causing you:
On Your Tippy Toes
Because your toes are constantly bent into an unnatural position, a range of ailments can ensue such as ingrowing toenails and damaged leg tendons. You can also develop bunions (I have personal experience of this.) You can cause nerve damage and can end up with knee and hip problems and your body tries to compensate by balancing your posture. Then you may get lower back pain, sciatica and may develop plantar fasciitis. The muscles in your calf may shorten and then when you take off your shoes you notice pain. Just to mention a few things.
Lets Cheer You Up Again
Well that was all a bit depressing. So what can I do? I love my heels I hear you saying….
Okay so here’s the thing. You can do some things to help:
- Save the heels for the days when you know you aren’t standing and walking around too much.
- Get some heels which are a bit lower and have more room for your toes.
- Alternate what you wear, day by day, and maybe during the day, so take a pair to swop, and when you know you have to walk have a comfortable pair handy.
- Buy some nice soft insoles. Check your foot arch too, to see that you have enough support.
- Be sure that you have bought the right size shoes, often one foot is bigger than the other so you need to accommodate the biggest foot, yes I know it sounds obvious but we have all done it.
- Stretch your feet and legs every day.
Last but not least. Get some Bowen. If you are already in pain, come for a Bowen treatment.
