About Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy using essential oils from plants and flowers. The oils can be used in many ways including aromatherapy massage and inhalation. Aromatherapy oils have an effect on well being and help reduce stress.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years with some of the earliest records dating back to ancient Egypt. Perfumery gained popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries and during this time apothecaries opened which allowed people to buy their own essential oils for home use.

How Does It Work?

Aromatherapy works in two different ways, through skin absorption and through the sense of smell.

Some essential oils contain anti-inflamatory properties which may help relieve pain or fight infection when applied to the skin. However a GP’s advice should always be sought if you have an illness or infection.

Inhaling or smelling essential oils is another way aromatherapy is used and the nerves that help us to smell are linked directly to the brain which sets off a reaction in the body. This is why smells are so often linked to memory and may trigger happy or sad feelings.

The Oils

There are hundreds of different aromatherapy oils but an aromatherapist is likely to use a combination of two or three. Some of the most common oils are:

Lavender – for relaxation, calming, and helps promote sleep.
Neroli – helps with anxiety, comforting.
Ginger – said to calm digestive complaints, revitalising.
Eucalyptus – helps relieve respiratory congestion.

Oils can be used in a burner, added to a bath, sprayed onto fabric, steam inhalation, applied vie aromatherapy massage or directly inhaled. It is important to take advice from an aromatherapist first to ensure safety, and be sure to read the instructions on essential oil packaging.

Benefits of Aromatherapy Massage

Benefits of Aromatherapy Massage:

The most relaxing way to use aromatherapy is through the experience of an aromatherapy massage.  Essential oils are added to a carrier oil and massaged into the skin.

  • encouraging lymphatic draining, reducing fluid and toxin build up.
  • stimulates the bodies own immune system
  • boosts circulation helping the blood and oxygen pump around your body
  • eases tense, aching muscles
  • promotes relaxation and relieves stress, reduces nervous tension
  • can help lift the mood, physical touch boosts release of endorphins

The Treatment

A full body treatment will take about an hour.  Treatments are relaxing, de-stressing and calmling, and you will leave with a feeling of wellbeing.  The massage is firm but gentle, and not a deep remedial type massage. The emphasis is on applying the oils effectively whilst unknotting and working on major muscle groups.  Music is generally played in the background unless you prefer silence.  The therapist will let you take the lead on whether or not you wish to talk.  Some people like to talk, but others prefer to take the time to relax in silence.

Before the treatment there will be a consultation about your general lifestyle, your health, any medical problems, any medication you may be on.  You will then be asked to undress down to your underwear and helped on to the couch.  You will be covered with towels or a sheet to maintain your comfort.

After the treatment keep the oils on for the remainder of the day; if it is an evening treatment then keep the oils on overnight.  This means you will get the benefit from the essential oils having longer to absorb into your skin.

Contraindications

There are some instances where oils can interfere with prescribed medication, and some instances where treatment cannot take place without first consulting with your GP but this is rare and will of course be discussed with you.
