So What’s All This About Worry Beads?

The English Worry Bead CoWorry Beads

Some years ago my brother bought me a keyring which was made of gorgeous wooden polished beads.  I still use the keyring although it is getting a bit tatty now.  What I noticed was that when I was feeling anxious, such as sitting in the waiting room of the dentist surgery(!), I would fiddle and twiddle with the smooth wooden beads.  Then one day by chance I came across The English Worry Bead Company on Facebook and noticed they are based in Daventry.  I contacted them and asked them to send me a guest interview blog as I was intrigued by the idea of these Worry Beads.  I am now the proud owner of a gorgeous set of Worry Beads courtesy of The English Worry Bead Company.  Read on to find out more about these beautiful beads and how to get your hands on a set of your own ..

I first discovered worry beads when given a set as a bit of a joke Christmas present but by New Year I was a changed person.  I had suffered from anxiety and depression for many years but found by playing with worry beads I was calmer and more relaxed.  Unfortunately it was about New Year that the Greek set I had been given started to fall apart.  A thorough search of the internet resulted in no more robust sets being found.  I decided to make my own.  Two months later I had come up with a set that was unique to me and more tactile than the ones I was replacing.  It occurred to me that if I needed better worry beads so would many others, so The English Worry Bead Company was born.

Worry beads work in two main ways by just “twiddling” with a set, nice and slowly your heart rate will mimic the pace of your hand and eye moments.  Your breathing also follows and as a result you become relaxed.  The second benefit comes from distracting you from negative thoughts.  Even the most mentally healthy of us have stressful days and struggle to switch and just running the beads through your hands helps to distract your mind.

Things here at The English Worry Bead Co are busy I am continuously looking at product development and marketing.   When I do get time to relax I like to go to the gym and spend time out at my “Potting Shed” enjoying the views of the glorious Northamptonshire landscape.  These days it takes a lot to annoy me but I suppose injustice is biggest trigger.  My 2 sons give me tremendous joy and any time spent with them is valuable, I’m building this legacy for them.

I believe worry beads should be part of everybody’s tool kit for life. If you want to know more about the benefits take a look at Professor Emily Holmes work on “visuospatial tasks” and of course The English Worry Bead Co website www.englishworrybeads.uk where you’ll see all our beautiful products along with many blogs I’ve written about my experiences and how worry beads have helped me.
